Papers, Please
Episode 17
intermediate
Hello there, everybody! We're back with another episode of this Papers, Please game, because we're not done yet. I've taken a little bit of a break. I have some people visiting me, but I finally have some more time to record, so we're going to hop into the other episode. If you're new here, this is a series where we're playing Papers, Please, and it's made for English learners. So I'm going to go slower, talk about things, explain things. If that sounds interesting to you, there's a link down in the description to go to episode number one to start from the beginning because a lot has been happening. So let's hop into the story here in day number 29. So the paper here is a bit crazy. It says, Serial Child Killer Escapes United Federation Prison. So, well, first off, a child killer is somebody that kills children, which is terrible. And a serial is something that is done often, right? So it has to do with things being done in sequence or in series. And so if you've ever watched a TV show, those are often called series as well, because they're in order, they're in series. And so a serial something is somebody that does something over and over again. So this guy has killed several children, many children. And he has escaped from prison. His name is Simon Wenz, and he's a native to Arstotzka, to our country. Is he trying to return home? We'll have to find out so let's walk to work. It's December 1st 1982 And if I remember last time we had some pretty creep Hello Inspector it has been some time Read your bulletin carefully today. We will be speaking with many workers Your audit comes soon. He says I will personally conduct it. There is nothing to fear Work hard. That's very scary. He's a scary dude. So he's talking about an audit. An audit is when somebody looks into everything about a company or a country or a person in this case. So he's going to look through everything we've done and he's going to conduct an audit, which could end with us losing our job or going to prison if he doesn't like what he sees. He told us to read the bulletin carefully. Notice, all government workers are subject to a thorough information audit. Involvement with unauthorized groups is grounds for immediate arrest. Our audit is scheduled for December 24th. Do not leave your designated region. So they're going to be going through all of our everything to see if we have any involvement with unauthorized groups like Ezek. And so that's going to happen in three days. It is the 21st today. It's going to happen on December 24th. We cannot leave our designated, our assigned, this region, this part of the country where we are. Continue to confiscate all Arstotzkan passports from native entrants. Oh, right. We have to confiscate Arstotzkan passports. Glory to Arstotzka. Here's the wanted criminals list. Wow, okay. Alright, we can't mess things up. We have to be careful. Transit, duration of stay, two weeks. All right, I have to remember how to play the game. So she's 53 kilograms, 173 tall, numbers match up. She's from Impor. Transit, two weeks, she said. Yeah, two weeks is good. Bobbed hair, correct. Enter buys in the future. Katarina Machiavelli, Machiavelli, Katarina. Impor, that expires in the future, she's born in the past. She's 21, she doesn't look 21, but can I even check that? No, I can't. I can't say that she looks too old to be 21. Oh, no, 21, younger, whatever, it doesn't matter. I don't see any problems with this. Maybe I'm forgetting something, but I think I'm okay. Sort of forgot all the rules. Oh, vaccine certification. Dang it. They tricked me. It's Georgie. Oh, look, okay, so let's go through what he's saying. Hold on, I know a guy. Okay, so what just happened there? So, shush, I need to tell the people what you're saying. So he said, I read the newspaper. Hello, Georgie. Things are getting crazy. Maybe you should think about getting away for a bit. So he's saying that we should leave. Maybe, Ubudistan is a good place. Ubudistan is where he's from, right, his country. right up next door, up north, right? If we go back to the map, this is Ubudistan, right up there. And then I say, but our passports have been confiscated. They took our passports away. We can't leave. Hey, that's not good. He said, then he says, hold on. I know a guy, just give him real passports to work with. He charges info to match for you. He changes info to match for you. So he'll change people's passports so that it matches me. So he's basically saying this is not his passport. It's not a real passport. I learned that in the hard way. Need forged Oberstan docs? It looks so real, approved for entry. Fair rates, no questions asked, and fast turnaround. Conditions on back. Passport pricing is 20 plus entry ticket. Client must provide existing Oberstan passports to be modified with new info. Service at border, Arstotzka, Obristan. Ask for Timofei, we. So he's basically saying that we could make fake passports To get out of the country. And we were just threatened by the inspector that sounds like a pretty good option. All right. Maybe we'll try to take away some Ubudistan passports from people and get out. We have how many people in our family? I think there's like six of them, so we have to get like seven passports, counting me. Wow, that's okay. That might be a big difficulty. Anyways, let's look at his details here. Oh, it looks actually okay. Transit, two days. I mean, yeah, we know who he is. Ubudistan. Skull. It's against polio, right? Oops. Although I'm wasting time here. Polio vaccination certification. Yeah, all right. I think I'll consider your offer. Hey, you know what? He says, take my passport. I'll get another one, no problem. Now memorize flyer and read it back if you want to and give it back. Do not get in trouble. Okay, so. Obudistan, really great this time of year, lots of snow, he says. Not sure where to get more passports for your family, but you're a smart guy. You can figure out where to find more passports. Okay, so we can take Obudistan passport. Oh, what? He gave it to me. Oh boy. Okay, now we're getting a lot of... of these things. Alright, this lady... Okay, this is... What? How do I get the date? Huh? How do I... Get out of here! How do I, because this is expired. She got a vaccination in 1973. Matching data, but valid for three years. I don't know how to mark this as wrong. This happened like nine years ago. Can I click, what can I click on? So I can click on this. Oh, can I do this? Ah, there we go, geez. This vaccine is expired. I know nothing about it. I have to take your passport and give you the denial and the reason. Oh, geez, I'm going so slow. I can't give you your passport back, lady. It's being confiscated because you're Arstotzkan. Contact the number on this lip. Yada, yada, yada. All right. Okay, gotta go faster, gotta go faster, there's more stuff for people to process. Purpose of your trip, diplomatic envoy, Arstotzka, that matches, Samuel Schmidt, Shingleton, 84 in the past, polio, that works, Samuel Schmidt, that looks good. Just double check that his doc looks good, or actually that's on the map. So he's from United Federation, which is, not that seal haha the seal on the document is forged i cannot uh... now i'm not going to detain you we'll go faster this way next please So I'm still looking for Obristan documents, I think. Oh, look. Okay. So I think we'll take her passport. Laura Baker. Okay, look. Laura Baker, that's good. That number's good. Polio is good. Baker Laura, Lauren does, that all looks fine. Visiting for a month, few weeks, yeah. 57 kilos, 176. That looks fine, nobody's done. Enter by is wrong. You can't enter using an expired document. So I take this and I deny her. Right, I think that's what I'm supposed to do. What is this slip? Where's my passport? It's being confiscated. What should I do? Contact the number on the slip. That's what I tell her to do. Not a great thing that I'm doing. Yeah, I'm just taking more passports, but I've got two. That's pretty good. Valid for three years. Is this good? Okay, now he's good. Rafael Salomão. Rafael Salomão. Salomão Rafael. Okay, that looks good. His name looks good. Okay, perfect. He's from Repúblia. Those numbers match up. Visiting for a month. Yep. 181 centimeters, true. 101 kilograms, balding. Entropy is in the future. All this looks fine to me. You can go, sir. Cause no trouble. Okay, we're good. Look at it. Simon Wens, that's this guy. I follow him for many weeks. I know he's coming here soon. It is a big favor I ask, but it is important. I let him through if you see him, but take his passport first. I come back. You give me his passport and I track him down. I make him suffer like he did to Yulia. That's his daughter. Oh, boy. Well, okay, you can't just kill children. But also, you shouldn't really, like, go seek revenge. I'm not gonna let this guy go to prison. Okay, you don't have a passport, lady. Rules, entrance must have a passport. They took away my passport. I'm sorry, but you cannot go through if you don't have a passport. Um... Okay, so we've got a lot going on right now. We've got this, okay, we have two passports here. Your wife found an old family picture. You can now escape to Obristan with one family member, because we need a picture to put inside the passport, right? So class, okay, so we have $45, and we can escape to Obristan. We have one, two, three, four, five family members plus us. So we need six passports to get through. And those each cost 25 so we need 6 times 25 is 150 Dollars so we need to work a lot more So or we need to not eat Because now we're sort of running out with low on money if we want to get away for 150 so I think I'm gonna say that we don't eat food today and And heat is really cheap. So we'll eat food today. Or we won't eat food today, we'll eat tomorrow. And we'll try to escape, because in two days... The inspector is coming to try to take us away. So roadblock to Kolechian resolution. Contested city drives wedge. This is not a whole, doesn't mean much, but roadblock is something that's in the way. Resolution is, right, finishing a problem, solving a problem. And contested is like there's a problem between something, right? There's a contested city drives a wedge, right? So this is the... Excuse me, so a wedge is like something that's between two things. And so they're talking like there's a contested city between Kalachia and another country or something. Oh, no. What do you want now? Leave us alone! Who's coming to see us now? Oh, this is our old family photo. Let me take this down. I'm not sure if... Well, I don't know. Should I have it up? Should I have it down? I don't know who this is. Maybe this place is not so bad. With everything going on, checkpoint visit is a nice break, he says. You've received 16 citations. There are no more plaques. These are a plaque, remember? Okay. He just needs to come by and do that. That's okay. Let's put up a family picture. I can't put that picture up or anything of Julia. I'll put this up there too. I'll put up all my things. Okay. So, that's fine. Was this garbage can there before? That looks new to me for some reason. Whatever. All government workers are subject to a thorough investigation. That's the same. Continue to confiscate passports. Glory to Arstotzka. Same thing. Okay. Nothing new today. We're still trying to make money. We're trying to find... Oh, but it's on passports. We're still... Yeah, okay. Here's one. I come to work. Duration of stay be two months. Okay, so you're... Isaac Gojkovic. Gojkovic, Isaac. Isaac Gojkovic. Let's check this really quick. Done. Ooh, that is not correct, sir. Please let me through, he says. No, but I'm actually gonna take your passport and deny you. That is not very nice of me, but I need your passport to get away with my family. Contact number on slip. So that's our third passport now. And we're taking up, we're getting a bunch of citations, but I don't really have an option. Okay, so that number is, that's good. Simon, oh, it's the guy. Okay, so this is... This is the guy that killed this girl. So, but I don't want her father to kill him and go to prison. So I want to try to arrest him. I don't want him to go to prison. I don't want this guy's, this girl's father to go to jail and kill somebody. It's terrible what happened. Horrible, but... Oh, passport not confiscated? He's going to prison! Oh, come on! This is ridiculous. Vastula, Mina, Vastula, Mina, birthday's the same, 172, 54 kilos, future. So annoying. I'm getting Vastula. Happy cholera polio, sure. That looks good, that looks good, that looks good. You're good for entry, there you go. Passport is being confiscated, sorry. What should I do? Contact the number on the slip. I'm really, this is hard today. I'm really not very focused. All right, papers please. Another Arstotzkan citizen. I like the picture on the wall. Reminds me of how my family was. Why thank you, Paulina. Petrovka, Paulina Petrovka, that's done. Polio, Tuberc, that's good, that number matches, cool, okay. 63 kilos, 180 tall, birthday matches up. Petrova Paulina, she's not a wanted criminal. East, yeah, East Grestin, right, it's fine. Arstotzka, East Grestin, yeah, okay. All right. Here you go. Thank you. Oh, take care of your family.
